The Autobiography of Charles Walker
"BLIND BUT NOW I SEE" as told to Jewelene Banks
Charles Walker was born in Akron, Ohio on April 2nd 1947. He was partially-sighted from birth until age 19 when he became totally blind. He has led one of the most extraordinary lives of anyone known to mankind. He graduated from the University of Akron where he earned a Bachelors degree in Political Science and worked towards his Master’s degree. In Blind but Now I See, he tells his story in an inimitable and unsparing voice, from the times of his life in Mississippi to his burning desire to become a leader and politician. Overcoming poverty, blindness, the loss of his mother, and the pervasive discrimination from those that are sighted, Charles Walker is acclaimed worldwide as a genius and humanitarian. By combining faith, love and determination, he has become one of the most sought after speakers for civic groups and school organizations. Throughout his career, while treating his handicap as a non-handicap, Charles has remained in complete control of his life. He has never allowed anyone to tell him what he can or cannot accomplish. As Ebony Magazine once put it, “Charles Walker is candid, often hilarious, always warm, touching, and deeply human.” Charles often states that “Being blind is no different than having heart disease or a serious case of high blood pressure. It’s not contagious.
